Chapter Seven

Charlene

“What the hell was that about?” I charge into the room behind Noah and slam the door behind me. “I thought we were in agreement about this! Why were you going to take the money?”

“Charlene, I was trying to help you! Your mother offered me money, I thought if I took it, then you didn’t need to share your inheritance with me anymore. You’d have more for yourself and…”

“You don’t even know her! Do you know what would have happened if you’d taken that money? You’d owe her for the rest of her life. You’d be bought and there would be no way to get out from under her. Take it from someone who’s been trying for years.” I wrap my arms around myself, both for comfort and to put some kind of barrier between us. I can’t believe he was going to take the money like that.

“I can take care of myself, Charlene. Despite what you may think, I’m not a little boy who needs his hand held.”

“No, Noah, you do. Especially when it comes to talking to my mother.” Where does he get off talking to me like this? Much less trying to psychoanalyze my relationship with my mother? “She is none of your business.”

“I’m sorry, you wanted me to pretend to marry you and I’m the one that needs hand-holding? You couldn’t even figure out how to get what you wanted without getting me involved! And because I’m not doing everything exactly the way you want it, you’re getting all pissed off about it. Everything doesn’t have to go your way, you know.”

I dig my fingers against my temples. Why is he making this more difficult than it needs to be?

“I didn’t figure you to be this dense,” I mumble under my breath, my temper getting the best of me. Not quietly enough, it seems, because Noah’s in my face and has me by the front of my shirt.

“You don’t get to call me stupid. No one does. Didn’t you hear a word she said back there? About us?” He shoves me back but I step back into place again. I’m not going to let him dictate where I can and can’t be.

“What? About our parents? It’s just a bunch of hog shit. Rumors. Assumptions.”

“Charlene. If your mother goes with this to the courts, it would be the perfect reason she needs to have the marriage annulled. And then where will you be?”

“Oh shit...” My anger flickers out like a candle in a hurricane. As much as I don’t want to admit that he’s right, to ignore it would be stupid of me. In my haste, I hadn’t considered that my mother’s hunch could be right. That would screw up a lot of things, to be sure.

“Who’s the stupid one now?” Noah whirls around and heads into the kitchen. I hear a glass being placed heavily on a counter and the glug-glug of something being poured. Most likely bourbon from the fridge.

Okay, so maybe I jumped the gun on this one.
